Energy
The per-capita consumption of electricity in Punjab is higher than any other State in the country. In 1995-96, this figure was 744 units (kWh). The installed power generation capacity in the State is now 3523 MW and is likely to increase to 4151 MW by the end of 1998-99 with the commissioning of the Ranjit Sagar Dam and the Lehra Mohabbat Thermal Power Plant near Bathinda. A new thermal power plant is being is being set up at Goindwal, district Amritsar by an independent power producer in the private sector. It will have a capacity of 800 MW.
The total electrical energy availability in the State during 1997-98 is estimated at 22.37 billion kWh. This is a little short of the total demand. The shortage is experienced in the peak agricultural season during June-July, and is met by purchasing power from other States.
